Brian Hutcheson

Started working in the whisky industry with Diageo in 1980. Worked with Laphroaig, Tormore, Black Bottle whilst owned by Whitbread Wines and Spirits Division. Joined Whitbread Restaurants to support growth in TGIFridays, Beefeater and Brewers Fayre. Born and raised in Scotland with tremendous knowledge of Scotland's national product. Trainer since 2002 with many stories, vast experience and inside knowledge of all aspects of whisky. Fantastic number of distilleries visited and a personal malt vault worthy of a tour in it's own right.

Aug 25: As gin's popularity within the British Navy grew, so too did its influence on naval traditions and practices. One of the most significant of these was the daily 'rum ration' or 'tot,' a practice that had its roots in the 17th century. Originally, the ration consisted of beer, but due to the difficulties in storing beer for long voyages, it was replaced with spirits, primarily rum, but gin was also included, especially on ships patrolling colder climates.
